Thanksgiving09 Oct

There are just a few sailing days left before the winter returns and we would like to end this sailing season by celebrating the summer and observing Thanksgiving on our traditional Thanksgiving Sail from October 9th to 12th.  We hope you will join us for a great weekend of sailing!

We would like people to be at the vessels Friday  October 9th at 6:30 p.m. We will be dismissing the crews on Monday, October 12th at 11:00 a.m. The ships are both located at Marina Quay West, 539 Queens Quay, more specifically they are at the foot of Spadina and Queens Quay.

The cost is a $150 for the three days. The gear list is the same as the summer list but leave the shorts behind and be sure to bring a few extra wool sweaters, mittens and gloves, scarf and a wool hat as it can get quite cold on the lake in October.

Reservations will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

WaterLife Screening15 Sep

TBI fundraising event – Private Film Screening

Dear friends, neighbours, alumni, supporters of all stripes and other generous and thoughtful people:

As you know, the mission of Toronto Brigantine Inc. (TBI) has an important impact on the youth who participate in the program. As a registered charity, TBI has served the community for nearly 50 years, instilling leadership skills in thousands of youth and generating millions of hours of work in volunteer support.

On Tuesday, September 15th, you are invited to support TBI while enjoying a captivating evening of film and lively discussion with the director. This exciting event is expected to raise over $1,500 to offset operational costs related to safety training of the crew. Tickets cost $40.

About the film:

Waterlife is a documentary about the state of the Great Lakes that follows the flow of the lakes’ water from the Nipigon River to the Atlantic Ocean. Using both documentary actuality and computer imaging, Waterlife begins at the primeval forests of Superior’s north coast, stops at the baroque fountains of Chicago on Lake Michigan, continues to the rain-swept streets of Detroit and beyond, all the while examining how the greatest body of fresh water on Earth transforms the societies it passes through and is transformed by them.

The film’s goal is to take viewers on a tour of a stunning ecosystem that is facing complex challenges. Beyond that, our hope is that Waterlife will engage viewers in a visceral experience of the element that is so vital to our lives—and to the mission of TBI.

About the director:

In 2007, Kevin was honored with a retrospective of his films at the Hot Docs festival.. Kevin won two Geminis for Stolen Spirits of Haida Gwaii (2005), a feature-length documentary that follows the cultural rejuvenation of the Haida people. He has also won a Gemini Award for the Discovery Channel series Cod: The Fish that Saved the World. His feature films include The Face of Victory; An Idea of Canada; McLuhan’s Wake (Chris Award, Columbus Film Festival); Intelligence (Best Documentary Feature nominations at Hot Docs and Gemini Awards); In the Reign of Twilight (Award, Columbus Film Festival) and The Falls (Best Documentary Feature nomination, Genie Awards; Toronto International Film Festival selection). Films for television include Lifting the Shadow, Truth Merchants, and The Music Garden, a collaboration with cellist Yo Yo Ma. Kevin is also the author of the non-fiction book Arctic Twilight and several audio essays for CBC Radio’s “Ideas”. His newspaper work was honored by the Canadian Association of Journalists for investigative excellence, and he has received a Governor General’s Award nomination for public service journalism.
