How old do I have to be to sail on Pathfinder and Playfair?

A:

Our youth programs are for youth between the ages of 13 and 18.

Can adults sail?

A:

Yes, please contact the office to discuss opportunities in this area.

Can youth groups sail during the summer?

A:

Yes, if an entire boat is booked by the group. Youth/school groups usually sail together in the spring or Fall.

Will I be on the ship for the entirety of the course ?

A:

The ships are usually at sea for two or three days, then may go to anchor or tie up at a port. During a port visit you may be given shore leave to explore the surrounding community.

Do the ships sail through the night?

A:

Yes, the ships regularly sail 24 hours a day.

Do I need to know how to sail?

A:

No previous experience is required. Many of our trainees have never been on a boat before.

Do I need to know how to swim?

A:

All our trainees MUST be comfortable in and around water. Parents and guardians will be required to verify this information with the office. 

Do I have to climb aloft in the rigging?

A:

All trainees are encouraged to climb aloft to participate in furling the sails. However, it is not mandatory that all trainees participate in climbing aloft. 

Our crew understands that some trainees may be uncomfortable with heights and we are prepared to accommodate those who are would prefer to not climb aloft. 

What kind of safety equipment do the ships carry?

A:

Navigation Equipment: 

GPS, Radar, Depth sounder, High intensity running lights, Current nautical publications and charts, Compass, and Sextant.

Communication Equipment:

2 25W VHF radios, 5W handheld VHF radio, Cellular telephone, Signal ensigns. 

Safety Equipment:

3 B-pack life rafts, 30 safety harnesses, 40 life jackets, Fire fighting equipment, First aid kits and equipment, Flares dye and smoke signals, Kisby rings and down buoy.

 

How do I get to and from the ships?

A:

Transportation to meet the ships or return to your home is not included in your fee.  You are responsible to make your own travel arrangements at your own expense.

Who is responsible for the ships and their Crew?

A:

The captain of each ship is responsible for the safe passage of their ship and its crew. They are the final authority in all matters during an adventure.

Can I get a refund?

A:

Yes, a full refund (minus $150 administrative charge) will be provided for cancellations made before May 1st. After May 1st, a full refund will only be provided for cancellations due to health or medical reasons (a physician’s certificate is required). If Toronto Brigantine cancels a course for any reason a full refund will be provided.
